TROUBLESHOOTING
MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MPI) <4G1>
13B-17
NOTE: The engine warning lamp is caused to flash when the electronic-controlled throttle valve system is
deactivated.
Camshaft position
sensor
• The ECU resumes the conditions having existed before the sensor
malfunction was determined and use them for the subsequent control.
• The ECU cuts fuel supply 4 seconds after detection of the malfunction (only
when the No. 1 cylinder top dead center is not sensed at all after the ignition
switch is turned to ON).
Throttle valve control
microcomputer
The ECU controls the engine output with the electronic-controlled throttle valve
system deactivated.
Alternator FR terminal The ECU prohibits the control in which the alternator output is limited depending
on electric load (as a result, the alternator operates free of such a control).
Throttle valve control
servo
The ECU controls the engine output with the electronic-controlled throttle valve
system deactivated.
Throttle valve position
feedback
The ECU controls the engine output with the electronic-controlled throttle valve
system deactivated.
Accelerator pedal
position sensor (sub)
• The ECU determines the accelerator pedal position using the signals from
the accelerator pedal position sensor (main). However, the pedal stroke
position thus determined is interpreted as approximately a half of the normal
state position.
• The ECU cuts off fuel supply when the engine speed exceeds 3,000 r/min.
• When the accelerator pedal position sensor (main) is also malfunctioning,
the ECU deactivates the electronic-controlled throttle valve system and limits
the engine output to a certain low level.
Manifold absolute
pressure sensor
The ECU performs control assuming a 101 kPa manifold absolute pressure.

INSPECTION CHART FOR DIAGNOSIS CODES

CAUTION
If the ignition switch is turned to the ON position with a connector or other electrical connections dis-
connected during troubleshooting of a system, a diagnosis code may be set for other systems. After
finishing troubleshooting, check diagnosis codes for all systems, and if any codes have been set,
erase these codes.

INSPECTION CHART FOR TROUBLE
SYMPTOMS
M1131151501956
Items
Trouble symptom
Inspection
procedure
No.
Communication
with M.U.T.-III is
impossible
Communication with engine-ECU is not Possible
1
Engine warning
lamp
The engine warning lamp does not illuminate right after the ignition switch
is turned to the ON position
2
The engine warning lamp remains illuminating and never goes out
3
Starting
Starting impossible (No initial
combustion)
The starter is impossible to operate.
4
Starting impossible (Starter
operative but no initial combustion)
The starter is operative and cranks
the engine, but no combustion takes
place in cylinders and thus the engine
is not started.
5
Starting impossible (Initial
combustion but no complete
combustion)
Initial combustion occurs but the
engine stalls soon later due to
incomplete combustion.
6
Improper starting (Long time to
start)
It takes long cranking time to start the
engine.
Improper idling
Unstable idling (Rough idling,
hunting)
Engine speed is not constant (varies)
during idling. This condition is usually
detectable by movement of the
tachometer needle as well as by
engine vibration transmitted to the
steering wheel, shift lever, vehicle
body, and so on.
7
Improper idling speed (Too high or
too low)
The idling speed is not within the
normal speed range.
Engine stalls during idling (Die out) The engine stalls during idling
regardless of vehicle movement.
Engine stalls
The engine stalls when starting the
car (Pass Out)
The engine stalls during operation or
when the accelerator pedal is
depressed while the engine is idling.
8
The engine stalls when decelerating The engine stalls when the vehicle
decelerates.
