TROUBLESHOOTING

MULTIPORT FUEL INJECTION (MPI) <4G1>

13B-21

Driving

Engine does not revolve up

The engine speed does not increase
even the accelerator pedal is
depressed.

9

Hesitation, sag

The vehicle speed (engine speed)
responds with too much delay when
the accelerator pedal is depressed for
acceleration from a certain vehicle
speed, or the vehicle speed (engine
speed) drops transiently during
acceleration. These phenomena are
called "hesitation" and strong
hesitation is called "sag".

10

Stumble

When starting the vehicle, the engine
speed responds with too much delay
to initial operation of the accelerator
pedal.

Poor acceleration

The engine operates smoothly during
constant-speed driving, but during
acceleration, the rise in speed is
insufficient compared with the one
expected for the degree of throttle
valve opening. In addition, the engine
fails to reach the maximum speed.

Surge

The vehicle jolts longitudinally and
repeatedly during constant-speed
driving or acceleration.

The feeling of impact or vibration
when accelerating

Large impact is felt during
acceleration.

11

The feeling of impact or vibration
when decelerating

Large impact is felt during
deceleration.

12

Knocking

The engine makes a pounding or
clanking noise that would be
generated if a cylinder were
hammered, deteriorating the drive
quality.

13

Ignition timing offset

The basic ignition timing does not
conform to the standard timing.

14

Stopping

Run on (Dieseling)

The engine continues to run even
after the ignition switch is turned to
the LOCK (OFF) position.

15

Exhaust gas

Odor, white smoke, black smoke,
and high concentration of CO/HC
during idling

Exhaust gas smells very nasty,
includes white or black smoke and/or
contains carbon
monoxide/hydrocarbons at high
concentration during idling.

TROUBLE SYMPTOMS TABLE

CAUTION

If the ignition switch is turned to the ON position
with a connector or other electrical connections
disconnected during troubleshooting of a sys-
tem, a diagnosis code may be set for other sys-
tems. After finishing troubleshooting, check
diagnosis codes for all systems, and if any codes
have been set, erase these codes.

Battery charging
capacity

Battery run down

Battery runs down prematurely or
battery's charging capacity is
insufficient.

17

Engine cooling
performance

Overheating

Engine coolant temperature rises to
an abnormally high level.

18

Abnormal rotation of fan motor

The fan motor operates whenever the
ignition switch is turned to the ON
position regardless of the engine
coolant temperature.

19

Air conditioner
performance

Poor A/C performance

The air from the air conditioner is not
cool or at a temperature too much
different from the target temperature.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE FOR
DIAGNOSIS CODES

Code No. P0011: Variable Valve Timing System

FUNCTION

• The engine-ECU checks the variable valve timing

system for malfunction.

TROUBLE JUDGMENT

Check Conditions

• After Engine starts

• Oil feeder control valve is in OFF position.

• Oil feeder control valve is normal.

• Camshaft position sensor and crank angle sensor

are normal.

Judgement Criterion

• While detected phase angle is at more advanced

angle than most retarded angle advanced by 15

°

for 10 seconds

Check Conditions

• Ignition switch is in "ON" position.

Judgement Criterion

• V.V.T. monitor current is abnormal.

Check Conditions

• Ignition switch is in "ON" position.

Judgement Criterion

• Battery voltage is more than 9.0 V.

• V.V.T. monitor current is abnormal.

Check Conditions

• Ignition switch is in "ON" position.

Judgement Criterion

• Battery voltage is more than 9.0 V.

• Oil feeder control valve is in ON position.

• V.V.T. monitor current is abnormal.

PROBABLE CAUSES

• Failed oil feeder control valve

• Oil passage of variable valve timing control sys-

tem clogged

• Failed variable valve timing sprocket operation

mechanism stuck

• Failed engine-ECU

DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

STEP 1. Check oil feeder control valve itself.

• Check oil feeder control valve itself (Refer to
