Troubleshooting - '96 - 98 Models
DTC 4-3
CAUTION: Whenever the ignition switch is ON (II), or
has been turned OFF for less than 3 minutes, be careful
not to bump the SRS unit; the airbags could accidentally
deploy and cause damage or injuries.
NOTE: The PCM memory must be reset after reconnect-
).
Try to reproduce the SRS indicator light:
1. Erase the DTC memory (see page
).
2. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and check that the SRS
indicator light comes on for about 6 seconds and then
goes off.
Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. See
Troubleshooting Intermittent Failures on page
Check for a short to another wire or decreased resistance in
the passenger's seat belt tensioner:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF. Make sure you have the
anti-theft code for the radio, then write down the fre-
quencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then disconnect
the positive cable, and wait for 3 minutes.
3. Disconnect the front passenger's seat belt tensioner 2P
connector from the right side wire harness.
CAUTION: Do not disconnect the driver's seat belt ten-
sioner connector.
4. Connect the special tool to the right side wire har-
ness 2P connector.
5. Reconnect the battery positive cable, then reconnect the
negative cable.
6. Erase the DTC memory (see page
).

Short to another wire or decreased resistance in the
front passenger's seat belt tensioner; replace the passen-

Check for a short to another wire or decreased resistance in
the right side wire harness:
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then disconnect
the positive cable, and wait for 3 minutes.
2. Disconnect the driver's and front passenger's airbag con-
nectors, then disconnect the driver's seat belt tensioner
connector (see page
).
3. Disconnect the SRS main harness 18P connector from
the SRS unit.
NOTE: Do not disconnect the special tool from the
right side wire harness 2P connector.
4. Check resistance between the No. 5 terminal and No. 12
terminal of SRS main harness 18P connector. There
should be approx. 2.0 - 3.0
Faulty SRS unit; replace the SRS unit (see page
).

Short to power in the front passenger's seat belt tension-
er; replace the passenger's seat belt (see page
).

Check for a short to power in the right side wire harness:
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable, then disconnect
the positive cable, and wait for 3 minutes.
2. Disconnect the driver's and front passenger's airbag con-
nectors, then disconnect the driver's seat belt tensioner
).
3. Disconnect the SRS main harness 18P connector from
the SRS unit.
4. Remove the special tool from the right side wire
harness 2P connector.
5. Reconnect the battery positive cable, then reconnect the
negative cable.
6. Connect a voltmeter between the No. 5 terminal (+) of
the SRS main harness 18P connector and ground.
7. Turn the ignition switch ON (II), and measure voltage.
There should be 0.5 V or less.
8. Connect a voltmeter between the No. 12 (+) terminal of
the SRS main harness 18P connector and ground, and
measure voltage. There should be 0.5 V or less.
Faulty SRS unit; replace the SRS unit (see page
).
