NOTE:
• If an intact airbag assembly has been removed from a scrapped vehicle or has been found defective or damaged dur-
ing transit, storage or service, it should be deployed (see
).
• Before removing the gearbox, remove the driver's airbag assembly and steering wheel.
• After installing the gearbox, check the wheel alignment and adjust it if necessary.

Troubleshooting
General Troubleshooting
Check the following before you begin:
Has the suspension been modified in a way that would affect steering?
Are tire sizes, tire variety and air pressure correct?
Is the steering wheel original equipment or equivalent?
Is the power steering pump belt properly adjusted?
Is steering fluid reservoir filled to proper level?
Is the engine idle speed correct and steady?
Hard Steering (Check the power assist (see page
). If the force is over 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7 Ibf), proceed with this troubleshooting.
Check pump fluid pressure (see
page
).
Measure steady-state fluid pres-
sure while idling with the both
valves fully open.
It should be 1,500 kPa (15 kgf/ cm
2
,
213 psi) or less.
Check the flow control valve (see page
).
• Check the valve for smooth movement in the hous-
ing.
• Check the relief valve for leaks.
Check pump fluid pressure (see
page
).
Measure pump relief pressure
while idling with the pressure con-
trol valve fully closed.
It should be 7,800 - 8,800 kPa (80
-90 kgf/cm
2
, 1,138-1,280 psi).

Measure the force required to
turn the wheel with the power
steering speed sensor hose
plugged and the vehicle parked
(see page
).
Check force required to turn the
wheel (see page
).
Start the engine and measure
force required to turn the wheel to
the right and left. Difference of the
force required to turn the wheel to
the right and to the left should be
2.9 N (0.3 kgf, 0.7 Ibf) or less.
Adjust the rack guide (see page
), and recheck the pinion
torque.
• Steering effort still more than 25 N (2.6 kgf, 5.7 Ibf).
Check the assist control valve for sticking or a
clogged orifice; clean the valve as necessary (see
page
).

General Troubleshooting (cont'd)
Assist (excessively light steering) at
high speed.
Shock or vibration when wheel is
turned to full lock.
Steering wheel will not return
smoothly.
If the problem is not corrected by
adjusting the rack guide, replace
the gearbox.
If the measurements are out of
specifications, adjust the rack
guide.
Wheel alignment is normal.
Check the steering wheel opera-
tion and power assist check (see
page
).
A and B cylinder lines are nor-
mal, check wheel alignment (see
).
Wheel alignment is abnormal,
adjust as needed.
A or B cylinder line is deformed;
replace it.
Check cylinder lines A and B for
deformation.
Check the rack guide for proper
adjustment (see page
).
Check the rack guide for proper
adjustment (see page
).
Rack guide is adjusted properly.
Check the belt for slippage and
adjust as necessary (see page
If the problem is not corrected by
adjusting the rack guide, adjust
the front wheel alignment (see
).
Rack guide was backed off exces-
sively.
Adjust the rack guide.
