Acura RL (1996-2004 year). Manual — part 274
Idle Control System
Idle Control System
The HDS or the scan tool indicates Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0506: Idle control system RPM lower than
expected.
NOTE: If DTC P0511 is stored at the same time as DTC P0506, troubleshoot DTC P0511 first, then troubleshoot DTC P0506.
Possible Cause
IAC valve mechanical malfunction
Idle air control thermal valve malfunction
Throttle body clogged port, improper adjustment
Intake manifold gasket leakage
Intake air hose loose or leaking
Vacuum hoses leakage
ECT sensor incorrect output
Troubleshooting Flowchart
— The MIL has been reported on.
— DTC P0506 is stored.
Problem verification:
1. Start the engine. Hold the
engine at 3,000 rpm with no
load (in Park or neutral) until
the radiator fan comes on,
then let it idle.
2. Check the engine speed at
idle with no-load conditions:
headlights, blower fan, rear
defogger, radiator fan, and air
conditioner are not operating.
Is it 650 ± 50 rpm?
Intermittent failure, system is OK
at this time.
NO

Check the IAC valve:
Disconnect the 2P connector from
the IAC valve.
Does the engine speed drop
or the engine stall?
Replace the IAC valve.
YES
Adjust the (base) idle speed. If
it's impossible, clean the ports in
the throttle body.

The HDS or the scan tool indicates Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P0507: Idle control system RPM higher than
expected.
NOTE: If DTC P0511 is stored at the same time as DTC P0507, troubleshoot DTC P0511 first, then troubleshoot DTC P0507.

Check the idle air control thermal
valve:
1. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
2. Remove the cover from the
idle air control thermal valve.
3. Start the engine and let it idle.
4. Put your finger on the valve
seat area and check for air
flow.
Is air flow felt in the valve
seat area?
NO
Check for vacuum leaks, make
sure the throttle valve is com-
pletely closed, and repair as
necessary.
Adjust the idle speed. If it's
impossible, replace the IAC
valve.
Check engine coolant level and
for air in the cooling system. If
OK, replace the idle air control
thermal valve.
NOTE: If the cover of the idle air
control thermal valve was
removed, do the PCM reset pro-
cedure.
